Sunday Stamps II - 22

issued February 2014 from Switzerland
designed by Karin Hänni

Strobilomyces streobilaceus is also known as 'old man of the woods'.
The cone fungus has dishevelled scales covering its cap and stem and is found in mixed beech woodland. Do not snack on this mushroom - it has a bitter taste and is not edible.

Lovely design, I like the us of a monochrome background which I presume is a microscopic view of the cap.

I am also a big fan of the seemingly abstract background.

A great name for a mushroom. One of the best such stamps I've seen.

Me too, I was caught by the amazing background.

I was moved to Google "old man of the woods" and came across a fascinating site, the answer to all my mushroom queries of the future.

So am I, it's a beautiful background (and I agree with Bob: such a great name!)!
